Acrylics on canvas, 16x20 inches. This photo is slightly blurry. Title chosen in part because of the look and in part from the Smashing Pumpkins song. No I do not care if you think the song sucks 
Why is the dark red 'wound' area surrounded by much less intense colors? Of course there is the practical reason of contrast, but I see more than that. Strong negative emotions can completely fill up your consciousness at the time, but in reality they happen in a larger context of less intense experience which is more common. If you can keep that understanding of the rarity and transience of intense emotions in mind during the intense experience, you may find that the emotion is kept under a reasonable amount of control. The contrast that you see in the painting also occurs in consciousness.
